Davao City First District Representative Paolo Duterte announced Tuesday he might vie for the speakership position in the House of Representatives.
The presidential son has previously said he has no interest in the position, but changed his heart because of talks of ‘term sharing’ being obsessively pushed by Congressman Alan Peter Cayetano.
“Moapil na ko pagka-speaker,” said Cong. Duterte
“The house is divided, I might be able to help unite it. Pareho lang kaming binoto ng mga tao ah. Kung term sharing, term sharing na kaming lahat,” the presidential son said.
Duterte is proposing that the speaker of the house post be shared by representatives from Mindanao, Visayas, Luzon, and the partylist groups.
“I will ask the visayas bloc to elect their speaker for their term share, and so with the Mindanao bloc and the partylist coalition,” Duterte said.
“We are not talking about two persons here. We are talking about our beloved country. It is not about speakership alone, but who is the right person to unite congress and I hope those running for the speakership stop influencing the cabinet,” he further said.
President Rodrigo Duterte earlier warned that he would resign from Office if his son would join the speakership race. But this was before the race became so hotly contested among Duterte’s allies in the Lower House.
Several congressmen are one in saying that with a 3-way race among Duterte supporters, only Rep. Duterte could unite them all again.
