Ex-priest nabbed for drug pushing in North Cotabato

COTABATO CITY — Police in North Cotabato arrested on Wednesday a former Catholic priest for peddling illegal drugs during an anti-drug operation in Matalam town.

John Baring Ferolin, 42, of Barangay Lower Katingawan, Midsayap, Cotabato, did not resist arrest when lawmen nabbed him for selling prohibited drugs, Matalam police chief Maj. Joseph Brian Placer said.

Placer said Ferolin, a former member of the Makati-based Mission Society of the Philippines (MSP), was placed under surveillance prior to the 2:30 p.m. drug buy-bust operation inside a restaurant at the Matalam public market.

“Police agents arrested him after he handed over a sachet of shabu to a police poseur buyer. Also seized from him were shabu paraphernalia,” Placer said.

It was not clear why Ferolin left the priesthood, authorities said.

In 2016, Ferolin was also arrested and detained on charges of illegal drug possession. He is now detained at Matalam detention facility while charges for violation of Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 are being prepared against him. (PNA)
