Two strong earthquakes shook Davao Region before noontime Saturday, December 29.
Initial report showed that the two tremors happened minutes apart with the first quake registering at 7.2 magnitude while the second is at 6.9 magnitude.
The epicenter of the two tremblors is in Pondaguitan in Davao Region just off the Davao Oriental coast. Depth is recorded at 49 and 59 kilometers respectively.
No tsunami alert has been raised so far.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology meanwhile officially recorded the tremor at 7.1 magnitude and its epicenter is at 162 kilometers off Governor Generoso in Davao Oriental.
Phivolcs also issued a “minor sea level disturbance” advisory. They cautioned the public, especially those living near the coast of strong currents and rapid rise and fall of seawater level.
People are advised to stay away from the beach from 12 noon until two in the afternoon or until the threat has passed.
Affected areas are Davao Region, Sarangani, South Cotabato, Agusan and Surigao provinces.
Authorities are still determining as to the damages caused by the said quakes.
