It’s open season for the vice mayoral post in Davao City come May 2019 elections.
This after former Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte confirmed Friday that his wife and incumbent Catalunan Grande barangay captain January Duterte would not seek any elective position.
In an interview after filing his certificate of candidacy for the 1st congressional district of the city Friday, the presidential son said that his wife wanted to focus on her barangay and their family instead.
“Mao to wala na siya nidagan pagka Liga ng mga Barangay president kay mag concentrate nalang siya sa among mga anak ug pagka kapitan sa Catalunan Grande,” Paolo said.
With January out, three city officials are reported to be very interested to run for vice mayor — incumbent Vice Mayor Bernard Al-ag, Councilors Danilo Dayanghirang, and Mabel Sunga-Acosta.
Presidential son Sebastian Duterte is also among those expected to run but people close to him said the youngest presidential son is not interested in joining politics anytime soon.
PULONG FOR CONGRESS
Paolo Z. Duterte filed his Certificate of Candidacy today, Friday, the 2nd day fo filing of candidacy before the Commission on Election (COMELEC) office in the city.
Paolo, the former Vice Mayor of Davao City is vying for the congressional seat of the First District of the City after he resigned as vice mayorship on December 2017.
Paolo said that he decided to run for Congress after months of talks with his family.
“Maoy nadesisyonan namo sa pamilya sa pila ka bulan namo nga pag plano sa politika. Maoy nadesisyonan namo sa 1st district,” he said.
Paolo said he has not talked to his father, President Rodrigo Duterte, lately about his plans but added that the President is aware of his political plans.
For years, the Nogales family has been holding the 1st congressional district of the city, however, there is yet no sign of any members of their family who will be throwing their hats on the congressional seat.
Jericho “Koko” Nogales already filed his CoC as party list representative while Karlo already served his three terms in the Congress.
Paolo though said that the 1st congressional district is still open for those who would like to seek the seat.
“Demokrasya mani no, so okay lang kung naay mag file. Mangampanya lang ta. Ana man jud na election mani,” he said.
Paolo served as the Liga ng mga barangay President from 2008 to 2013 before he became the Vice Mayor of the City from 2013 to 2017.
