Mayor Inday Sara Duterte said the city government is currently in talks with the Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB) for the High Priority Bus System (HPBS) that will take the place of jeepneys in the city.
With this, Mayor Inday said she was optimistic that the HPBS will start operation in 2019.
“We have already identified five routes in the city where we can start our transition to the bus system,” she said in a press conference after her 2nd State of the City Address on Tuesday.
“We are finalizing our talks with the LTFRB and some private bus companies for the transition,” Mayor Inday added.
The five pioneering routes will serve as a test for the transition. It will also be used to further study the viability of replacing jeepneys with buses in the city.
The five routes are Toril to San Pedro St.; Cabantian to Agdao; Catalunan Grande to Ma-a Diversion Road; Mintal to San Pedro St.; and Ma-a to Buhangin.
The aim of the HPBS is to lessen the traffic congestion in the city, especially so that infrastructure and economic development continue to progress.
Mayor Inday, though, assured that the city government will see to it that the affected sectors will be compensated and packages are currently being readied for them.
“Packages will be available to the drivers depending on their interests, whether it be money, skills or buy in, in the project or service other routes. It will really depend on their interest and wants,” Mayor Inday said. CIO
