President Rodrigo Duterte acknowledged Davao del Norte 2nd District Rep. Antonio “Tonyboy” Floirendo Jr. as a childhood friend and a political benefactor when he ran for president in 2016.
In his speech before the Davao City convention of the Hugpong ng Pagbabago last August 18, Duterte told the crowd that he does not have any rich friends that are half-wit.
The President was narrating how some were suspicious of his reason for closing down Boracay. He said some suspect that he would soon give Boracay to his rich, crazy friends so they could put up casinos there.
“Wala akong friends na mayaman, na gago. Marami akong friends na mayaman na hindi gago,” Duterte said.
The President then turned to Rep. Floirendo who was sitting infront of the stage and gestured a supined hand.
“Pahingi ng pera kay eleksyon na, Tonyboy,” Duterte told Floirendo in jest.
Floirendo was the biggest political donor of Duterte in the 2016 presidential election having donated P75 million as declared by the Duterte camp.
President Duterte said his friendship with Floirendo goes way back when they were still kids as they were neighbors back then.
“Kami ni Tonyboy bata pa kami nito pareho kami ng subdivision. Bata pa kami magkakilala na kami. Hindi yqn by accident (friendship),” Duterte said.
