President Rodrigo Duterte will step down from power if former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. would win in his electoral protest against incumbent Vice President Leni Robredo.
Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque made the statement during a press briefing Thursday.
Few days ago, President Duterte again expressed his desire to resign but said that he does not want VP Robredo to replace him.
Duterte said he favors the likes of Marcos and Senator Chiz Escudero to replace him instead.
The Constitution however mandates that based on the law of succession, it is the Vice President that is next in power.
If Marcos Jr. however wins in the electoral protest, he would be declared as the VP and would be able to succeed Duterte as the septuagenarian president wishes.
