Is Hugpong ng Pagbabago going national soon?
This seems to be the assumption by many after the once local political party of then Davao City Mayor and incumbent President Rodrigo Duterte has now become a regional political party under its nee chairman and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio.
In his speech before the HNP mass oathtaking in Davao del Norte Friday, August 3, Special Assistant to the President Christopher “Bong” Go recalled how they started the then Hugpong sa Tawong Lungsod back in 2001 election when then Davao City 1st District Rep. Rodrigo Duterte was running for mayor against incumbent Mayor Benjamin de Guzman.
Go said that they only had a handful of barangay captains under the Hugpong and yet they were able to wrestle back power.
Go said that at the present set-up where the HNP had been increasing in members, he expects the regional party to go national by 2022.
“Sana maging national at lalong palakasin. Masarap magkaroon ng partido na ipinanganak sa Davao,” Go said.
More than 5,000 new members from Davao del Norte alone took their oath of allegiance before HNP Friday.
The mass oathtaking was attended by Go, Senators JV Ejercito and Cynthia Villar, and Ilocos Gov. Imee Marcos.
Many politicians outside of Davao Region expressed their interest on coalescing with HNP come 2019 elections.
HNP chair Sara Duterte-Carpio however said that they will remain a regional political party but added that she is not closing the possibility of coalition with other national political parties.
