The supposed ouster of House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez was averted after the plenary session was drastically adjourned by Cebu Rep. Gwendolyn Garcia shortly after noontime Monday, July 23.
Alvarez opened Monday’s session at 10am with a speech. After the roll call, the Speaker suspended the session for more than an hour.
Shortly after noontime, Rep. Garcia entered the plenary hall and moved for the adjournment of the session until 4 p.m. for the Sona.
The move was opposed by a congressman but his opposition fell on deaf ears as Rep. Garcia hurriedly left the plenary hall.
Hours before Monday’s session, rumors were rife that Alvarez will be replaced by Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
The plot was said to have been initiated by Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte- Carpio who reportedly called several congressmen Sunday evening to get their support on the Alvarez ouster.
As of ten in the morning, it was said that more than 200 solons have already expressed their support for Rep. Macapagal-Arroyo as the new Speaker.
